North 2

Seen from the sunroom, Milsons Point, Neutral Bay, Kirribilli and North Sydney. The focus of these images is Kirribilli Point and Admiralty House (and here) with distinctive white chimneys.

The distant shores

of Milson's Point and the north pylons of the Harbour Bridge can be seen from the bedroom window.

6:46:38, things appear to be simmering down

but on closer examination at 6:49, there is activity
at 6:50, the second show begins

Meanwhile

Almost overhead at this time, the Moon and Jupiter have been "close" recently. This pair have hung out together before!

The moon is full on the 17th.

The Peach Planet

At 6PM today Mars was 217,891,370 or so miles from Earth. This measurement is called "geocentric distance."

The light time to Mars today at 6PM was 19.494 minutes. The peach planet is receding from Earth.

On August 27, 2003 the geocentric distance to Mars was close to 34.646 million miles.

Grand scale

Saturday, 9 August 2008

It's Mars!

Yes, it's the red planet. Not Venus, which is very close to setting. Saturn is also too low, only around 7 or 8  degrees above the horizon and blocked by the city skyline.
