At 6PM today Mars was 217,891,370 or so miles from Earth. This measurement is called "geocentric distance."
The light time to Mars today at 6PM was 19.494 minutes. The peach planet is receding from Earth.
On August 27, 2003 the geocentric distance to Mars was close to 34.646 million miles.

Yes, it's the red planet. Not Venus, which is very close to setting. Saturn is also too low, only around 7 or 8 degrees above the horizon and blocked by the city skyline.
