Watcher at sunset

After spotting an all black magpie in September 2008, I found this sequence in my archives, taken on May 18, 2007 down in Victoria St. I wonder if it is the same one!

Misty morn

Taken between 5:38 and 6:03 am, AEDST. A thick clingy mist it was, reeking of brine.

Pigeon rescue

What is this agile, fast moving fellow up to?

A young pigeon has become entangled in the wire strung along the ledge of the Metro. Its wing is tightly wrapped due to frantic struggling.

Meanwhile, atop the other end of the Metro, this beak clogged Currawong watches out for hawks. If it saw one, it would sing a simple yet penetrating warning song, a six or seven note melody repeated frequently. I'm certain it isn't concerned with the fate of the pigeon though.

Carefully unwinding the wire from the wing took him over half an hour.

The bird cannot fly, and needs more help. Down we go.

The (lack of) view from my window prevented any further shots in this sequence. The small team of assistants that had assembled around him took delivery of the bird for further care and attention, leaving the noble rescuer on the awning of the Metro, the lowest point possible over the street, dithering about how come down. His support team, now that the mission was accomplished, soon started taking the mickey out of his indecision. They offered to catch him, but he eventually declined. They eventually went back across the street to the beer garden, calling out useful suggestions like "just jump" and (o the drollness of it) "pigeon detective".

Eventually he jumped into a tree and shimmied down, exactly how he'd climbed up, unassisted, safe and sound, on the ground. Nice one, matey, well done!!

Bug on a window

I posted larger size than normal, so click on the image for the full size for best effect.

This little winged thing was never going to be around for very long, one way or t'other, but I managed to do a camera battery change and stumble on an interesting angle - the second image - before it abruptly flitted off. I think they come up rather well.

As for the type, some sort of dragon or damsel fly?

Bank acquires moon

It is the morning after the night of the October full moon.

4:52 am

A funny thing happened on the way to the horizon at 4:56am.

Totally caged! I see now the true purpose of the adornment atop the Deutsche Bank building.

4:57 am.
